Social Media is the biggest change in communication since the invention of the printing press – Gary Vaynechuk – New York times best selling author of “Crush It”

You can check out what he accomplished using ZERO dollars and Social Media  here http://crushitbook.com/

I have been privileged to do many teleseminars over the last several months on the subject of my passion, Social Media Marketing, and I usually begin everyone with the statement above.

It gets people’s attention and it should because it sure got mine!

I first heard Gary make this statement last spring at the Social Media Success Summit 2009 and the more I thought about it the more it rang true.

Think about it, before the printing press, information was the key to power and those that could read and write controlled all the information and so they had all the power.

If you are not interested in a mini history lesson just skip down to the bottom of the page where I will tell you all about my FREE Teleseminar I am doing on the subject of Social Media Marketing Success Secrets  for 2010.

If you want some background about why this phenomenon is working read on.

MINI HISTORY LESSON:

Remember the aristocracy controls all the information and therefore have all the power.

This meant that the aristocracy and the church ruled the world until the mid 1400’s when Gutenberg invented the first printing press. The first published book was the Gutenberg Bible which ushered in the Reformation, but the technology quickly spread and also fed the growing Renascence which brought the world out of the dark ages.

Now fast forward to the 1990’s. There was a lot more knowledge and information available but accessing it was still a struggle. Universitie, corporations and other think tanks withheld as much as possible still believing, much like the aristocracy of the dark ages, that hoarding information gave them more power.

The Internet changed all that by making it possible to trade information and knowledge with incredible ease. Now people that had questions could begin to search for the people who had the answers to their questions online. Then search engines were formed and the rest is history.

Now we move forward to the early 2000’s and the idea of social media was born even though it did not have that name until sometime in 2006. It started with Facebook, then My Space and many other sites that have come and gone. Suddenly groups of people with common interests could connect and freely share information among themselves.

In 2006 Social Media was defined by Wikipedia (another user based content creation tool) as Internet and web-based technologies which transformed broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supported the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content creaters.

In simple English that means Social media is any online platform where people can share information and build relationship.

The History Lesson is now over this is the good part.

Sometime in 2006 some very savvy entrepreneurs and small business people realized that they could leverage the relationships they built on the Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter by giving away free, valuable, relevant information and Social Media Marketing was born.  Giving away information for free went against everything tradition marketers believed in but it worked. It allowed people to learn to know, like and trust online business people and those people became customers. These new customers told their friends and followers and Social Media became a word of mouth marketing platform on steroids!

Now this idea has spread to corporations and big business.  They have discovered it no longer pays to protect and manage information. Increasingly, people expect transparency and the companies that have embraced that concept are the ones that are doing the best in the challenging economic climate we have faced over the last year.

So Gary Vaynechuk was right, Social Media has created a revolution of transparency of information like the world has never known. The most successful businesses today are the ones that have entered the Social Media arena and immersed themselves in the concept that information should be freely available to anyone that wants it.

Really what what people pay for now are people or companies that develop systems for organizing and using all that free information.

It is an exciting time right now for business’ that have embraced this new model and the changes have been a long time coming. I am passionate about this change and truly love what I do as I help my clients learn how to leverage social media to increase their visibility, build credibility and develop relationships with people in their target market. Relationships that can lead to increased sales of their products and services.
