Do it Yourself Marketing – Where Do You Begin?

The Stats on Social Media are staggering! How do you decide when, where and how to join the conversation? There are over 150 million users on Facebook. The majority of Facebook users check the site and their profiles multiple times each day, often at first thing in the morning. The fastest growing demographics are in the 30 and over group, and many of these use their profiles, pages and groups to promote businesses, products, services and events.
⇒Twitter is a world and marketing tool all its own. Millions of people send out and receive all of their news and information via 140-character tweets. And nothing eles!
⇒Your website and your blog are still the most important ingrediant for effective online marketing. Without a website/blogsite you have no business.
As a solo-entrepreneur how do you begin? Should you sign up for accounts everywhere, fill in your profile information and then wait patiently for the swarms of people to visit your site? Or should you just jump in and promote yourself on Twitter and Facebook?
Actually the correct answer is neither. Before you sign up you should first evaluate why you want to join social media in the first place. This answer will help you decide on your strategy. Do you want to build your brand, educate your target market about what you have to offer or do you want to generate traffic to your site and build your list?
Notice I mentioned nothing about sales of your products and services. If this is your only reason for joining in the social media conversation you will fail miserably because you will have missed the point. The number one principle of social media is building relationships first and promoting second. You must give before you earn the right to receive.
People online are wondering what you have to offer them and will only be interested in what you might have to sell after you provide them with useful relevant information. They must learn to know, like and trust you before they will consider doing business with you. But isn’t that how you decide who to do business with offline?
