Yesterday was the last day of the month long Social Media Success Summit  2009 and this morning I have decided to blog about some of the sessions so that you can also benefit from all I learned

Today let’s talk about LinkedIn. Our presenter in the summit was Jason Alba,  the CEO and founder of JibberJobber.com, a career management website designed to empower professionals with powerful career tools.

His work has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal’s, Money Magazine, CIO, hundreds of blogs and dozens of newspapers and radio stations.

I know LinkedIn is not as exciting as Twitter or Facebook right now but it is the place your prospective new employer or joint venture partner will go to get the up to date information on what you do and all that you have done so it needs to be as complete as possible.

Here are some of his tips

1.    Chose the right photo – It is a mistake to not have a photo on LinkedIn. Chose a professionally done, current      headshot. It should  not necessarily be the same photo you use on Facebook or Twitter if that one is more informal.

2.    Edit your professional Headline with something catchier than just your name and title. You want your picture to jump out at people. Consider your tagline or something that describes what you do. For example my title says,

“Your Social Media Marketing VA”

3.    Label the Websites Display Links to Your Website or Blog correctly. When you go to add those sites, instead of using the default website dropdown go scroll down to “other” and then you can add any text you want to show up.

4.    Don’t forget to change the default LinkedIn URL to your vanity URL. To make your profile look more on purpose go to   ”edit your LinkedIn profile” then to the  ”public profile” section to create your LinkedIn URL of choice. Again here is my example. This is much easier to remember or say on the phone.

5.    Finish up with a Strong, SEO-Friendly Summary The “summary” section of your LinkedIn profile has a 2,000 character limit.  Most people add only a few sentences. Alba suggests packing as much about you and your abilities into it as possible. Don’t forget to use your keywords.

So now head over to your LinkedIn account and make the changes.
